Hologram Workshop

TIME: 10:00am
WHEN: 14 April, 2026
LOCATION: University of Queensland, St Lucia Campus, Lab 207, Building 7 Parnell Building
TIMEZONE: AEST
We’re excited to be holding a Hologram Workshop at The University of Queensland for kids and families to celebrate World Quantum Day on Tuesday 14 April!
Join us to explore the strange and exciting science of light at this hands-on workshop where you’ll make your own 3D hologram to take home! Discover how light behaves like both a wave and a particle – a quantum idea – and how interference and diffraction help create the amazing 3D images we call holograms! Plus, plenty of other hands‑on science activities to try!
Date: Tuesday 14 April 2026
Session 1: 10am – 10:45am – Book here
Session 2: 11am – 11:45am – Book here
Registration for this event is essential as spaces are limited. Max. 4 tickets per booking (1 adult, with up to 3 children).
This event is suitable for ages 8+ and all children must be accompanied by an adult
Location: University of Queensland, St Lucia Campus, Lab 207, Building 7 Parnell (07-207). Enter through the Great Court at the Physics Building and follow the signs to Lab 207. Map.
Cost: Free
What to bring and things to note:
- Enclosed footwear. All participants must wear enclosed shoes (no Crocs, sandals, thongs).
- No food or drink can be brought into the lab.
- The lights are dimmed for this activity to make the hologram (similar to a photography processing dark room).
Following the workshop, take a tour of the UQ Physics Museum and see the famous Pitch Drop Experiment.
There is also a fantastic display of Jewellery and Metalwork inspired by Physics by Dr Margaret Wegener, Senior Lecturer in Physics who has a particular research interest in developing innovative and effective ways to learn physics. Margaret has been a maker in metal for more than two decades and exhibits regularly with the Jewellers and Metalsmiths Group of Queensland.
What is quantum science?
Quantum physics is a science that studies how the tiniest things in the universe behave – like atoms and particles – and it turns out they act in very strange ways that don’t follow the usual rules of everyday life!
What is World Quantum Day?
World Quantum Day is an annual celebration promoting public awareness and understanding of quantum science and technology around the world.
About QUBIC
The ARC Centre of Excellence in Quantum Biotechnology (QUBIC) is the world’s first nation-scale initiative at the intersection of quantum technologies and the life sciences. Our mission is to deliver technologies that transform health, medicine, agriculture, biosecurity, and clean energy, while building the quantum workforce and industry of the future. The Centre is headquartered at The University of Queensland, with nodes at The University of Melbourne, the University of Technology Sydney, the University of Wollongong and Flinders University. Our research program develops quantum technologies that go far beyond what is possible today, from portable brain imagers to superfast single protein sensors.
