Abstract
In this presentation, Rodney Appleby will introduce Orica and its involvement with the QUBIC initiative, highlighting the background and vision behind the proposed lixiviate project. Drawing from his extensive experience as an industrial researcher within a large multinational company, Rodney will share personal insights into the transition from academia to industry, the nature of collaborative research, and the challenges and opportunities that come with working in the private sector. The session will conclude with an open Q&A, inviting discussion on career pathways outside academia and the dynamics of industry-based research.

Bio
Dr Rodney Appleby is a Principal Research Fellow at Orica with over 32 years of experience in industrial research and innovation. A recognised technical leader within the organisation, Rodney has played a pivotal role in developing and delivering cutting-edge technologies to the global mining sector. His work is supported by a diverse patent portfolio and a deep expertise in polymer materials science.

Since joining Orica in 1993, Rodney has contributed to the evolution of initiating systems, from the original EXEL non-electric systems to advanced technologies such as i-Kon®, WebGen®, and the next generation of light initiation systems. He is known for his ability to solve complex, interdisciplinary challenges—often leading multifunctional teams or serving as a senior technical advisor.

Rodney is widely respected across Orica for his analytical thinking, innovative mindset, and ability to apply technologies from outside the mining industry to create new solutions and revenue opportunities. His leadership in the Research & Innovation Group is marked by a commitment to mentoring, collaboration, and driving excellence through shared purpose.
