QUBIC Winter School 2025

The Winter School is designed to support Early and Mid-Career Researchers (EMCRs) through targeted skill-building sessions and networking opportunities. Building on feedback from last year’s QUBIC Summer School survey, the program will include sessions that are aligned with priorities identified by EMCRs and QUBIC Advisory Board.

The 2-day program will feature sessions aimed at communicating your science to different audiences, such as “Make a successful pitch and presentation”, “Applying for Fellowships”, and “Communicating with government and policy makers” – and using this knowledge to create successful collaborations, including “Transdisciplinary Innovation” (or how to work in a multidisciplinary environment), and a Q&A with Q-CTRL Founder & CEO, Prof. Michael Biercuk.

Date & Venue
Monday, 4^th August: UTS, Sydney, NSW
Program starts at 10:00 am on 4th August 2025 at UTS. The program ends at 4:30 pm for a bus transfer to Carrington Hotel, Katoomba, NSW.

Tuesday, 5^th August: Carrington Hotel, Katoomba, NSW  – thecarrington.com.au
The program begins at 8:00 am and concludes at 6:00 pm.

Is now open: Register by 30 June 2025.
Note: There is an opt-in activity for a 150 min Buunyal First Nations guided tour at Katoomba Scenic World on Tuesday, 5th August. Limited to 25 people (first come first serve, with wait list). People with accessibility needs will be prioritised. The tour fee is covered by QUBIC.

Cost
QUBIC will provide accommodation, transport from UTS to Katoomba, breakfast, lunch, morning & afternoon tea.

Accommodation
The rooms are Twin Singles with shared bathroom facilities, see here for details: Traditional Room. Special requests for single rooms will be considered.

Travel
Chartered Bus Transfer:
Departs from Sydney: 5pm on Monday 4^th August. After the first day of the Winter School finishes buses will leave from Thomas Street (at bus stop between Wattle and Jones St) Ultimo (around the corner from the UTS based part of the Winter School program) ETA at The Carrington Hotel Katoomba 7pm.

Departs from Katoomba: 3.30pm on Thursday 7^th August. After the Themes Workshop finishes buses will leave from the bus stop on Katoomba Street (in front of The Carrington Hotel) and travel to the Sydney Domestic Airport (ETA 5pm), then to Central Train Station (ETA 5.30pm).

For travel outside the Chartered Bus Transfer:
Trains operate between Sydney Central Station & Katoomba Station on the Blue Mountains Line. The trip takes approximately 2 hours. Trains to Katoomba depart from Central Station’s Country Trains platform (Grand Concourse). The Carrington is located ~200m from Katoomba Station. Change at Sydney Central Station for trains to/from Sydney Airport.
